Your examples are kind of hard to respond to because you brought up two games that were released in two generations under such different circumstances that affected their sales in ways that would be completely different compared to anything today.
I'd love to hear whether or not you agree, I don't think turn-based combat is overtly offensive but it just doesn't really hold my attention. This means that most video games generally don't stand the test of time particularily well from a gameplay standpoint, and many games that I enjoyed as a kid from the early 3D era have aged badly from things like bad cameras & whatnot. This isn't to knock the historical significance these games have or undermine how groundbreaking they were at the time, but video games have evolved & changed so much in such a short period of time compared to other mediums like novels or movies. Unless the RPG I'm playing has engaging gameplay elements or at least has a unique spin on the turn-based combat formula, I probably drop the game pretty fast. For someone like me who grew up in the internet age, I have that luxury of being able to just enjoy the story & music by just watching a let's play or stream online. Of course with hindsight being 20/20 the internet wasn't really a thing for the general public in the 80's & 90's, so if you want to experience these storys you had to play the actual game.
Rarely is the gameplay brought up unless it's regarding how the world & characters change in certain games like Chrono Trigger based on your choices. Whenever I see people talk about these beloved JRPG's online the most praised aspects are usually always: spritework, music, story, and characters just to list a few. Just to clear up my bias I don't particularilly enjoy turn-based combat, especially when it boils down to menu scrolling through lists of magic spells & item buffs.
